Turkey Trot for ADA

Brittany got up bright and early on Thanksgiving to volunteer her time at the Turkey Trot for the American Diabetes Association. The money raised from this "trot" helps kids with diabetes go to camp. This is the 28th year that this event has been held. While we were talking to other volunteers they told us that many of the participants had been doing it for the last 28 years, and that some of the original walkers/runners were now participating with their children. It was so neat to see so many families out there together.

This volunteer job was a little different from the others, since we were acting as traffic monitors. The walk was held along the Arizona Canal, and at several spots the walkers had to cross the road (without a traffic signal). We didn't stop the car traffic, instead we stopped the walker traffic. We helped them cross the road when things were clear. Once in a while we did actually stop a few cars when there was a large group of walkers. It was a very rewarding morning, and I'm thinking this may become a family tradition.

Walk to Save Animals

On Sunday, November 18th, Brittany attended to walk to save animals at Tempe Beach Park. This event was sponsored by the Arizona Animal Welfare League. It was a really fun event, everyone brought their dogs out to walk with them. We had to leave our lovely dog at home, because she would have freaked out with so many strange dogs around her.

Ready to walk for the dogs, while walking with the dogs. Brittany participated in the 2K walk. We had orginally planned on doing the 5K, but Arizona was experiencing unusally high temperatures that day. It was in the mid-90s, with no shade, of course we drank lots of water. There were volunteers set up along the route to provide bowls of water for the dogs. What was really funny to watch was all the dogs that kept jumping into the lake, they knew how to cool off!

Another part of the walk was trying to find homes for dogs in the shelter. Volunteers were walking those dogs with the cute little vests that said "adopt me".

Who could resist this face?? Brittany made a new friend while at the walk. We would have loved to bring him home, but with the zoo we already have my husband would not have been happy.

Brittany spun the Petco wheel, after making her donation to Petco charities.

Look what she won while spinning the wheel! The cats were so happy when we arrived at home with a basket full of food.

New Times 10K

This morning Brittany volunteered her time at the New Times 10K in Tempe. Originally she was located at the finish line where she was helping to collect the timing chips from the runners.

Then she was moved behind the scenes where she helped to sort and organize the chips that had been collected.

Meeting Mitchel Musso aka Oliver

On November 8th, Brittany headed over to the Girly Girlz Boutique in Scottsdale to meet Mitchel Musso, better known as Oliver from Hannah Montana. Little did we know that when we arrived we would be there for three hours before meeting him. It was an amazingly long line. Several local tv stations and Radio Disney were there. I didn't realize that it was going to be such a big event. I can only imagine what the Hannah Montana concert will look like tomorrow night.

Luckily the time did pass by rather quickly, with the entertainment from Radio Disney plus we ran into one of Brittany's pageant friends. Brittany spent her time hanging out with Danielle the Miss Arizona Jr Teen with the American Coed Pageants. The photo below was taken right before entering the building to meet Mitchel.

Mitchel turned out to be a really nice person, now I know why it took so long. He was spending time talking with each of the girls that were there for his autographs. Although, by the time we met him I could tell that he was pretty tired. We may have been standing in line for three hours, but he had been signing autographs and taking photos with hundreds of girls.

Walk for Autism

On November 4th, Brittany spent another day volunteering, this time at the Walk for Autism. It was an early morning, but well worth it. This morning she was joined by her sister Galaxy Queens and the Arizona American Coed Queens.

Waiting to be sent to our location for the morning. I'll bet they'll take a nap when they get home!

Brittany, Yara and Tana with the Phoenix Coyote.

The girls were cheerleaders along the route. Their job was to cheer on the walkers and keep them going. They did an amazing job!

Elisa Rister, Mrs. Arizona United States 2007 and Gina De Simone, Ms. Arizona United States 2007, stopped for a photo with all the girls. That's a lot of queens in one photo!

Luis Gonzalez was gracious enough to stop for a photo with Brittany, Tana and Yara. He was a fan favorite when he was on the Diamondbacks, currently he's with the LA Dodgers.

One of the ways the girls cheered people on was by "building" a tunnel. Some of the walkers, particularly the kids, really loved this.

At the end of the walk Orlando Hudson was signing autographs. He is currently a second baseman for the Arizona Diamondbacks. He had formed O's team, which had a very large group walking.

Walk for Juvenile Diabetes

On November 3rd, Brittany volunteered her time at the Juvenile (JDRF) Walk for Diabetes. She was joined by Tana, her pageant sister. It was an early morning, but well worth it.

Meeting the Phoenix Roadrunners Mascot.

The girls with Ron Hoon from the Fox 10 morning show.

Rick D'Amico from the Fox 10 morning show.

Helping out at a water station. Basically the girls filled the containers with bottles of water and ice, then they were moved to the next location.

The next station was wrapping hot dogs. After the walk everyone who participated received lunch. The girls helped to prepare those lunches prior to the start of the walk.

At the start line ready for the walk to begin.

On the move!
